with speaker Jack Minard, Executive Director, CV Land Trust

The Comox Valley Conservation Strategy is a unique and exciting project that provides local planning departments a framework for regional conservation of our rivers and streams, remaining sensitive ecosystems, critical watersheds and upland biodiversity corridors based on "Nature Without Borders - The Comox Valley Land Trust Regional Conservation Strategy" . This document can be viewed by clicking on this link: www.cvlandtrust.org/rcs-maps/land_trust_ph1report.pdf

All local jurisdictions, Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland and the Regional District have endorsed the report and have agreed to taking a regional approach to planning future land use. The Strategy "marries" closely with both the Regional Growth Strategy Process just getting underway and with the Sustainability Plan being developed for the Valley. These three initiatives along with the "Heart of the Watershed Symposium" planned for Oct 3 and 4 on the Courtenay River and Estuary will provide a broad picture of protection and restoration of our natural systems in the Valley as we meet a projected 21% increase in population over the next few years.

Jack Menard

Jack Minard, Executive Director of the Comox Valley Land Trust will present the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy using a series of GIS based maps and other slides that show what is proposed and offers opportunities to become involved. Jack has worked for the Tsolum River Restoration Society for the past 11 years and has been effectively building partnerships to improve water quality and quantity and habitat in the river. His involvement with the Comox Valley Land Trust began in 2004 as a Board member and as of January 1,  2008 to be hired as the group's ED.

On October 16 at a special breakfast meeting of the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce Jack will show how the Strategy works and how it benefits the business community over the long-term by protecting the quality of life and economic future of the Valley. Jack will be bringing the three dimensional landform map of the Valley provided by the Comox Valley Water Watch Coalition for participants to view.

A buffet breakfast will be served.
