October 29th, 2008 – Courtenay, BC.  Last Saturday’s fine weather brought out close to 40 people to attend Mountain Spirit Garden Estates’ Open House, and to help celebrate the completion of the initial phase of this subdivision project. The rural acreage located near the Medicine Bowls area on Forbidden Plateau Rd received final registration in late September.

"Within this 47 acre subdivision there are six large acreage treed lots ranging from 5-10 acres,” said Dan Bowen, MSGE Project Manager. “We have dedicated approximately 10 acres as park and trail corridor to the Comox Valley Regional District and placed approximately  18 acres in a vegetative protected area.”

The Open House included interpretative tours with Dan Bowen on the new lot and park trails, highlighting the green development features like the protected riparian and vegetative management areas that leave over 50% of the original acreage as natural habitat.

“This rural development preserves the natural elements and bio-systems on the property,” added Bowen. “Our overall vision is sustainable development that promotes health living in harmony with nature with recreational features. The trail systems on the property and in the area encourages hiking and social interaction that promotes health living.”

“We were very pleased to have such positive support for this development from the Regional District,” said property owner and MSGE president Catherine Egan. “Both our Area C Regional Representative Barry Minaker and Beth Rees, Manager of Parks, Comox Valley Regional District believed in this project. It offered us an opportunity to incorporate several of the sustainable planning concepts outlined in the 2007 “Green Bylaws Toolkit for Conserving Sensitive Ecosystems and Green Infrastructure.”

“The Mountain Spirit lots have been developed with forethought to preserve the natural beauty of Forbidden Plateau,” said Elaine Shelton who attended the Open House. “The pathways and the amount of dedicated parkland are a testament to Catherine’s vision of future nature-inspired homes for those of us who love the mountains and pristine wilderness.”

Only one of the acreages (Lot #4) is now available for sale, with plans to have another two lots ready for sale sometime in 2010 / 2011. Each lot has a defined building site and building guidelines to ensure that the homes harmonize with the landscape, and the house construction incorporates eco-friendly and energy efficient building principles.

The next Open House will be Saturday, November 8th between 2 pm – 4 pm. Along the another interpretative tour of the property and trails, the MSGE information kiosk, located on the newly created Mountain Spirit Way, will showcase information on green building and design concepts.
