If you’re looking for a change of employment scenery, you may want to consider the job opportunities currently available at scenic Mount Washington Alpine Resort. The resort, one of Vancouver Island’s largest employers, is looking to fill over 700 job vacancies by the beginning of the winter season.
“We’re definitely in the middle of a hiring blitz right now,” explains the mountain’s Human Resource Coordinator Owen Embree. “We’ve increased our exposure as an employer both internationally and nationally over the last couple of months. We’ve had representatives in the UK, Australia, and more recently at job fairs in Quebec and Nova Scotia. Now our focus is local. We hope to see lots of candidates show up at our job fairs in November.”
Mount Washington hosts two Saturday hiring fairs at the resort’s Alpine Lodge next month. The first fair takes place November 1st and the second is on November 15th. Both fairs run from 11am to 4pm and offer job seekers the opportunity to speak directly to departmental supervisors and lead hands. The resort will also be sending representatives to the Victoria Conference Centre for the Vancouver Island Education and Career Fair in Victoria on December 4th from 9am to 4pm.
The mountain hopes to attract applicants who possess a passion for delivering exceptional customer service. A great attitude, high energy level, and friendly demeanour are all qualities mountain representatives are looking for when screening candidates. Naturally, it also helps to have a pre-existing passion for the snowsports industry. Odds are, if you possess these qualities, an exciting winter in the mountains could be in your immediate future!
The snow, fresh mountain air, free season pass, and unique lifestyle are what may initially attract some to find work at Mount Washington. However, it’s the variety of jobs available that may seal the deal for many in the end. Positions are available in virtually every department. Food and Beverage, Mountain Operations, Nordic Operations, Tubing Park, Snow School, Retail Operations are just the tip of the employment iceberg! The upcoming job fairs will provide future employees with a unique insight into the mountain’s multi-faceted operations.
To get a better idea of what’s currently being offered by the mountain, Embree suggests visiting hr.mountwashington.ca. “We have an extensive job listings page where you can shop around for different positions. You can apply for the positions that interest you and then upload your resume, it’s that easy.”
Mount Washington’s hr site also provides information about the mountain, a short video highlighting the resort, and links to accommodation and rental properties available on the mountain and around the Comox Valley. If you have a property to rent, you can login to the accommodations page at the hr site and list your rental unit for all employees to see. The mountain’s goal is to make the website your one-stop shop for finding a job at the resort and securing your accommodation for the upcoming winter.
On top of the free skiing and snowboarding incentive via season pass, which definitely has its own appeal, Mount Washington boasts a comprehensive perks and benefits program for all employees. These include everything from expanded staff transportation services from the Comox Valley to the mountain, complimentary group lessons, and food and retail discounts. All staff are treated to legendary Mount Washington functions throughout the winter.
“If you work at Mount Washington, we encourage all staff to get out and enjoy what the mountain has to offer,” says resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “The view from our office is the type most people dream of!” Sooner than later, 700 lucky individuals will soon be sharing that same picturesque office view!
