SANTA FE, N.M. — Festivals on Vancouver Island and in Nova Scotia are highlighted in a list of the 25 best outdoor music fests in North America.
Outside magazine, based in Santa Fe, N.M., includes the Vancouver Island MusicFest in Courtenay, B.C., and Evolve in Antigonish, N.S., in the list published in its June issue.
The Vancouver Island event (www.islandmusicfest.com), slated for July 10-12, is an intimate celebration of folk and world music that draws about 9,000 people. It’s “nearly zero-waste — even the plates and cutlery are compostable,” says the magazine.
This year’s lineup includes folk icon Arlo Guthrie, Celtic-pop fiddlers Enter the Haggis and bass player Edgar Meyer.
Evolve (www.evolvefestival.com), scheduled for July 17-19, “could be a musical Eden,” with attendees on a bluff overlooking the hills of nearby Cape Breton, says Outside.
The festival features experimental, hip-hop, bluegrass and world acts. Performers this year include Mishka, Australian didgeridoo player Xavier Rudd, and Gratefully Deadicated Soundsystem.
Outside’s top 25 list also includes Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn., June 11-14; Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colo., June 18-21; Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Ore., July 2-5; Rothbury in Rothbury, Mich., July 2-5; Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Ky., July 10-12; Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill, N.Y., July 16-19; and Lollapalooza in Chicago, Aug. 7-9.
